The ideals behind the Freecycle Network are noble and geared towards helping the planet. They have thousands of groups with millions of members across the globe, but they have been facing the loss of members and groups left right and center (Most notably in the UK where Freegle has sprung up in the upheaval). Many have accused Deron Beal of trying to stifle the community, and others compare his opposition to change to Craig Newmark of Craigslist. Most agree though, the biggest issue with Freecycle is option.

Green IdeasWith Freecycle, you have 2 options, give and receive. You can post an item for somebody to take, or post something you are looking for. That’s it. Moderators have been known to be almost militant at times when people don’t follow these strict rules. But what about the people that want to do more with their stuff? They Can BorrowMe!

Similar to the Freecycle network, BorrowMe.com allows users to post items they want, or have to give away, but with many more options and control.

Posting Wanted Items - BorrowMe allows users to create a Wish list for the items that they are looking for while allowing them to specify if they want to borrow it, rent it, purchase it or simply take it off somebodies hands. Other users can find these wishes when browsing or searching and are able to contact the user if they have that item. However, if somebody missed the Wish and posts that item as something they have, then the person who was wishing for it will receive an email notification that the item they were wishing for has been posted! Cool!

Posting Your Stuff - It’s your stuff, why should somebody else get to tell you what you can do with it! BorrowMe gives you the options to Gift, Lend, Rent or Sell the items you post. Not only do you get more transaction options, but you are given full control over these options.

For instance. You have a nice 17′ Multi Ladder that mainly sits around collecting dust in your garage. You’re willing to lend that ladder to your friends, but you want to rent it to your neighbors and friends of friends for $5/day. You can do that! You can even set what kind of collateral you want when borrowing your items.

No Shows - One of the biggest issues that people complain about is the number of No Shows they get for their items. People seem to run through listings and try to claim everything that gets posted and then decide if it’s really worth their time. Of course, they never notify the person giving it away, who probably waited around patiently, longer than they should have, for them to show up.

BorrowMe helps to solve this by allowing people to give other users Feedback. If somebody no shows on a bunch of stuff, the next person can think twice about dealing with them after seeing that other people have already complained about them not showing up. People need to be accountable for their actions.

Grumpy Moderators – Are you tired of Freecycle moderators ruling with an iron fist? If you’re unhappy with the moderator on a BorrowMe group, you can leave without losing your stuff. When you sign up on BorrowMe, you tell us your location, so when people in your area search for stuff, it will show up along with items listed by groups. If you are part of a group, people are able to search within that group specifically for items, so you can have your cake and errrr.. lend it out too! Of course, you could always start your own group too, then you can be the all-mighty-ruler-supreme (Just don’t let it go to your head).

So if you’re upset with Freecycle and and are looking for alternatives, come check out BorrowMe.com and take it for a spin!
